SCOM & SCSM – Automatic Recovery

Microsoft has a support article, ID 2913046, that addresses the issue “The System Centre Management service stops responding after an instance of SQL Server goes offline” which basically involves creating two registry entries to ensure the service reconnects in 60 seconds, and therefore prevent it from going into a Not Responding state. The “Symptoms” section of the article reads… “After an instance of Microsoft SQL Server that hosts the OperationsManager database.. Read More

Save the Date for Microsoft Ignite 2016

Due to work and personal schedules I was unable to attend MS Ignite this year, which was a real shame, as I have heard many good things about the event, and I missed out on meeting my MVP friends who I only get to see once or twice a year.  So, I am very pleased that Microsoft have already announced the Ignite dates for next year, so I can make.. SCOM – Monitoring for Mount Point Labels

Hi All, Just sharing a new management pack for SCOM 2012 that I uploaded onto the TechNet Gallery. This new management pack provides a monitor to check that where mount points exist, they have labels.  The reason this is important is because SCOM will not discover mount points unless they have labels, but no alerts will be generated to advise of this.  This management pack changes that! The management pack.. Read More

DPM – Protecting SQL with Log Shipping

DPM is a great tool for protecting SQL Server databases for many reasons, but one in particular is that it can provide protection down to every 15 minutes.  By backing up the transaction log every 15 minutes, a SQL database can be restored to virtually any point in time, which is extremely useful, and has saved me on a number of occasions. One of the issues with protecting SQL.. Read More

SCCM 2012 Compliance – Auto Remediation

SCCM has a great Compliance feature, formerly known as DCM, which can be used to ensure computers meet a certain baseline of configurations.  What’s even better is that it can auto-remediate any drifts from the baseline, which makes it very powerful. I’ve recently had the need to implement a number of baselines, that contained configuration items that needed to auto-remediate, and I found it wasn’t quite as intuitive to do as.. Read More
